Lake of the Woods takes the cake for the longest shoreline in the U.S., stretching 25,000 miles. However, if you also count the shoreline of its tens of thousands of islands (14,522 to be exact), that number reaches 65,000.

Alaska has the most water
The state with the largest total area of water is Alaska, which has 94,743 square miles of water. Alaska contains approximately 12,000 rivers, 3 million lakes larger than 5 acres, and numerous creeks and ponds, accounting for more than 14% of the state's total area.

Crane Cemetery was one of almost 60 cemeteries whose sites were flooded when the dam was built. The graves were supposed to have been moved first, but some people believe that they were not! The Lake's greatest depth is 130 feet.

Are there piranhas in the Ozarks?
Piranhas are caught in Lake of the Ozarks and other nearby waters every once in a while. The source of these tropical fish is presumed to be aquarium owners who no longer want their pets and dump them in the lake.
Some of Missouri's lake sturgeon can grow up to 8 feet. The lake surgeon's relative, the white sturgeon, is the largest freshwater fish in North America – these fish have been found to reach 20 feet in length. Staggs said on a Facebook comment that it was "most definitely a catch he will never forget."
The Ozarks are home to several species of venomous snakes — including the copperhead, cottonmouth, pygmy rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake and further north in Missouri, the massasauga. These snakes are venomous, not poisonous.

Another one of the African Great Lakes, the aptly-named Lake Tanganyika – which means 'the great lake spreading out like a plain' – is the world's longest, second oldest and second deepest freshwater lake. It is also the second-largest lake when measured by volume.
