To do this, make a small amount of very thick slip with the same clay your piece is made of. In another container cover a wad of toilet paper with water and let it sit until the paper has broken down into pulp. You can speed this process by using an immersion blender.

Greenware is the best stage to catch a crack and stop it in its tracks. I recommend repairing cracks or structural problems as you go because cracking will often start to appear at points of structural weakness.

If it's only a small crack you may be able to burnish it out by rubbing it with the back of a spoon, or rehydrate the mug by spraying it with water and re-wrapping it then smoothing the crack out with your finger.

We mix dry clay and white vinegar that we can use as a glue. The main difference is that the vinegar mix will dry a lot faster. The fix will be quicker but might not be as sturdy as with slip. The slip will take a bit longer but might be a little sturdier.

Using regular slip on bone dry clay to join pieces is unlikely to be successful because of the moisture differential. Even if it does seem to have joined the two pieces, they are likely to break apart when being fired. However, you can either try to rehydrate your pieces and join your clay in its workable state.

Most pottery is fired twice (or in some cases 3 or more time!). The first firing is called the bisque, then there is a second firing for the glaze. This is the way you probably learned, and they way you probably do it. But it is possible to fire only once.

Since air bubbles in the clay can cause pieces to break when fired, encourage students not to overwork the clay, and keep this in mind when recycling extra scraps. Try to keep finished pieces not more than about an inch thick. If too thick, the clay may not be able to dry completely and can break when fired.

That's a recipe for cracked clay. Putting your pottery on a shelf for a week or two to dry is fine, just make sure it's not under a fan or vent. After molding your clay into a piece of art, having it crack or break from drying or heating too fast can be disheartening.
